Skate Park Opening
The new Lithgow Skate Park was officially opened by Federal Member for Macquarie Mr Bob Debus on Saturday, 26 September 2009.
Lithgow City Council received a total of $334,000 from the Australian Government under the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Programme to construct the Skate Park and associated landscaping, fencing, signage and car park, which greatly contributed to the total project cost of $400,000.
Councillor Neville Castle, the Mayor of Lithgow City, said “the construction of the new Lithgow Sate Park is a major milestone in works being completed under the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Programme, and is set to open for use in time for the upcoming school holidays”
Councillor Castle said “community consultation has been held with primary stakeholders, with very positive feedback resulting in initiation of a Skate Park Management Committee, who will oversee the regular use of the park, as well as it’s long term future”
“Thanks to a vision and fantastic effort by a group of local kids, and funding from the Australian Government and Lithgow City Council, a high quality park has been constructed for all members of the community to enjoy.”
Council recently invited well season skater Mitch Faber to test the Park, and provide feedback on the layout and construction. Mitch, from Coogee, has been skating for over 10 years, and has skated all over the world, including Canada, France, England and Spain, as well as mentoring at Camp Woodward in the USA.
Mitch Faber said “the new park is great for local skaters and bikers to use, whether they are just starting out, or are looking to improve their current skills. The park has generally good natural flow, and contains a variety of equipment including quarter pipes, banks, rails, spine ramp and blocks to keep users challenged.
“The bowl is the stand out of the park, it is spacious and has fantastic transition areas, and Council and the local kids have done a great job in getting a top quality park for the kids in the Lithgow area to use. It was pleasure meeting some of the local kids involved in the planning of the park, and I definitely know of other skaters from Sydney who want to come and try out the great new facilities. This park will produce a new generation of users, and in a few years, some really good skaters will be coming out of Lithgow, the construction of the new skate park is just the beginning.” concluded Mitch
